Like many others in the group, Penny Kay took up ceramics on retiring from paid work in order to bring up a family. Before then, gaining a place on an evening course was not feasable as it seemed to involve queuing all afternoon!

Penny delights in the versatility of clay, and consequently produces work in varied styles and techniques. Making a "useful pot" one day and a "sculpture" the next contributes to the spice of life.

A new challenge has come recently, since acquiring her own Kiln, as the truth of Leache's comments on unpacking a "firing" have been borne home: "That afternoon we went for a walk to escape the temptation to go fiddling with the kiln.....(on opening) all the iron glazes had come out well.....but a few of the blues were overdone and the cobalt, in its horrible purple intensity, had triumphed over iron....."

It is a surprise each time. To keep her developing, Penny welcomes commissions and also makes silver jewellery and indulges in printmaking.
